FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

1. What is INRouTe and who participates in INRouTe?

INRouTe is an expert knowledge driven network with the ambition to bring together a complementary diversity of technicians, scholars,practitioners and industry professionals (see Partners) to share information, practices and experiences that encourage comparative analyses, strengthen the foundation of tourism, and provide guidance to the competitive position of tourism destinations and services.

A select number of individuals and institutions are invited to join INRouTe from universities, research centers, firms, industry associations but also regional/local statistical offices, tourism administrations, government departments and partnerships located all over the world.

For more information see About INRouTe.

2. What does INRouTe offer?

INRouTe aspires to become a privileged instrument;

for the UNWTO:

  • To design and disseminate general guidelines
  • To foster the wordwide development of statistics, measurement and analysis of the economic contribution of tourism at the regional level
  • To promote the use of appropriate tools for tourism destination management

for the Associate Partners (APs):

  • Facilitating access to access to complimentary knowledge, providing a platform for communication that will provide access to INRouTe activities, such as  collaborative research/professional projects, partnerships and consortia potential.

3. What are the different ways to participate in INRouTe?

INRouTe is a restricted network that extends invitations to individuals and institutions for active involvement on its online platform by means of partnership. All participating institutions and individuals are referred to as partners and there are 3 levels of partnership composed of: Associate Partners (APs) which can be either individuals (Individual APs) or institutions (Institutional APs), Individual APs that are Member of the Scientific Committee (SFC), and Founding Partners (FPs).

APs are expected to actively participate in the network and are invited to make significant, thoughtful and innovative contributions.  Ideally, each of the four Research Areas and related Research Topics hosts a dynamic passionate group of APs that maintain lively discussion and contribute positively to their development.

Members of the SFC have additional responsibility to that of the APs. They are expected to, jointly, function as the research and expertise consulting body for INRouTe’s four Research Areas.

The FPs are the three entities that conceived INRouTe and that are jointly responsible for its governance.

4. How can I become Associate Partner in INRouTe? Is there a way that I apply for partnership in INRouTe?

Partnership to INRouTe is possible through invitation only. Nevertheless, interested institutions or individuals may apply for invitation by contacting INRouTe’s Technical Secretariat: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it Fore more information please click here.

5. How can I become a member of the Scientific Committee?

In principle, there exists no way to apply for a post on the Scientific Committee. Membership of the Scientific Committee entails a certain degree of involvement in the governance of INRouTe and depends on appointment by INRouTe’s Founding Partners (FPs). The official invitation to Membership is dispatched by INRouTe’s Technical Secretariat.

6. What does being a partner of INRouTe entail? (benefits and commitments)

Being partner of INRouTe has several benefits:

  • establishing new expert contacts;
  • access to useful tools for their research/professional agenda;
  • possibilities to foster strategic alliances;
  • the opportunity for publicizing current and future projects, including the opportunity to recruit Partners and/or interested institutions;
  • the opportunity to solicit feedback relating to one’s research/professional agenda or other issues of interest;
  • a certain prestige or recognition resulting from identification with INRouTe; and
  • the opportunity for an Institutional AP to publically display its logo and link to its website  on the INRouTe website and its official publications and documents.

Naturally, these benefits can only materialize if all Associate Partners (APs) and Scientific Committee Members actively participate in the network by fulfilling certain INRouTe commitments:

  • Voluntary engagement in Network activities: participation in discussion forums, providing new and relevant information and resources, proposing new potential Partners, and actively engaging in the question/answer process.
  • Each AP will have an online Profile that needs to be updated annually (per calendar year), including research/professional positions, projects/activities, advances in academic/industry standing, and the Current Work Summary. The updated Annual Summary of Work should include a minimum of five (5) new citeable references to relevant publications (books, articles, policy papers, annual reports, etc.).
  • Strict adherence to the Stipulations for Network Participation (among others, Confidentiality, Copyright and Intellectual Property).
  • Acceptance of INRouTe’s reserved right to terminate any AP’s partnership if these commitments are not fulfilled, revoking all rights and privileges associated to it.

7. Where is INRouTe located?

Even though INRouTe operates through a borderless online platform, it is managed by staff members of the three Founding Partners, all located in Spain: World Tourism Organization, CICtourGUNE and Araldi, S.L.  The day to day operations of INRouTe are carried out by the Technical Secretariat which is located within the Cooperative Research Center in Tourism – CICtourGUNE situated in San Sebastian (Donostia). All ICT engineering expertise is supplied by Araldi, S.L. which has several offices in major Spanish cities (Madrid, San Sebastian, Bilbao). The management direction is determined by the General Coordination Secretariat from within the World Tourism Organization in Madrid.

8. How is INRouTe financed?

On 7 July 2009, the three Founding Partners signed the document that gave birth to INRouTe and ensured its operational viability for the next four years through the commitment of specific resources by each of the signatories.

9. How do I know whether INRouTe is useful for me?

INRouTe is the acronym for International Network on Regional Economics, Mobility and Tourism. If your work (whether it be research or professional) concentrates or is significantly related to the one or more INRouTe Research Areas or Research Topics, you form part of the group of experts that INRouTe could potentially be useful to.

However, the true usefulness of INRouTe increases with an experts’ active involvement on the INRouTe intranet. INRouTe will only be useful to you if you are willing to go beyond merely uploading some of your existing work to engage in the electronic applications that INRouTe has to offer (see FAQ 10).

10. What are the applications made available by INRouTe?

The intranet space is restricted to Partners, administration and guests by means of a generated username with password and consists of:

OpenKM: hosts project and document management tools that ease interaction and coordination among Network Partners in a systemic and rigorous way. It provides each Partner with an individual or institutional profile page where the required documents can be uploaded and worked on privately before sharing the updated version with the network. It also functions as the platform for INRouTe’s efforts towards a documentation system that focuses on the four Research Areas.

Forum: to discuss, exchange ideas and information to consolidate the Research Areas and Topics.

Q&As: an important section of the forum where partners can ask questions with the certainty that they will receive a satisfactory answer in due time. These questions are preferably subject matter related but may pertain to any aspect of INRouTe and its functioning.

Who is who: partners’ profiles with an updated summary of current work and contact information to ease communication and coordination.

Calendar: allows partners to post relevant events to be shared with the network and, with prior consent, also publically to visitors of the INRouTe webpage.

I-Notes: a unique feature, I-Notes are INRouTe’s attempt at concisely interpreting the array of International Conference Papers, Partners’ Contributions and any other documents deemed relevant to contribute to the future development of tourism industries and tourism as an academic field. Some final versions of the I-Notes will be made public but only after consultation on the OpenKM.
